Differentiating between Capitalism and Democracy

Posted on | January 26, 2010 | Comments Off

As I listen to discussions about the supposed “socialism” that Obama is bringing about in our society, I keep hearing the argument for free market capitalism as some sort of a constitutional liberty or something. It seems as though somewhere along the line, many people have lost sight of the distinction between free market capitalism and democracy, thereby merging the two. I think that we need to realize the differences again.

Democracy is a system of governing whereby a group of people are able to rule themselves, and Capitalism is an economic system where people control their opportunites to make money with little to no interference by the government. America utilizes a “representative” democracy, where about 30 – 40% of the population choose representatives to make decisions for them which are then usually subverted to support the economic system, Capitalism. It is my belief that Capitalism as we know it is not a sustainable system. We need to take what works from each system, capitalism as an economic paradigm, and democracy as a governing paradigm, and do away with what is holding us back from both economic sustainability and social justice. Until we fully understand that these two systems are not the same thing, neither will be fully realized.
